What are the risks in sending your data for multiple quotations?

When seeking quotations, sending your data storage device to multiple or inexperienced data recovery companies exposes your data to several risks:

  • In many cases, you may only have one chance at recovering your data.
  • The more hands that handle your devices, the bigger the risk of being unable to recover the data. It is not uncommon to have only a limited number of attempts.
    • This could be as little as a single attempt due to an issue that would cause permanent damage, eliminating any future possibility of recovering the data.
  • When working with sensitive data, unnecessary handling of the devices adds an additional risk of data leakage and exposure.
  • Frequent transport can also lead to mishandling, temperature extremes, or moisture exposure and, in extreme cases, get lost in transit.
  • Also, varied evaluation methods, skills and tools among providers can worsen device conditions, potentially leading to irrecoverable data.
  • Unfortunately, some recovery service providers are less than honest. We have received drives previously sent to other data recovery businesses that were undoubtedly intentionally damaged, in some cases beyond recovery after an unsuccessful recovery or when their data recovery quote was rejected.

When you're entrusting your critical data to a recovery service, be on the lookout for these red flags:

  • Inflated Experience: The company exaggerates the number of years it has been operating. Be wary of claims that don't match reality.
  • Unrealistically Low Quotes: Receiving a very low quotation can often indicate hidden fees, subpar service, or a lack of proper equipment. Quality data recovery is a complex and expensive process.
  • Vague Job Numbers: The company provides a suspiciously high or vague number of completed data recovery jobs without credible substantiation.
  • Implausibly High Success Rates: They claim an unrealistically high success rate.
    • Any advertised average success rate above 70–80% should be a major warning sign, as even the best companies face technically insurmountable failures.

If a quote seems too good to be true, or if their claims of experience and success sound like marketing fluff, you should look elsewhere.

To mitigate these risks, give your data the best possible chance of being recovered by selecting a reputable data recovery company with a proven track record, the right tools and equipment, and a commitment to safe, secure and confidential data handling.
